Professional quality photos and video are an essential part of a website especially if you are serious about establishing a brand and growing as a company. We work with clients with a range of different needs and also very different budgets. When budget concerns come into play our goal is always helping prioritize what will best help propel a client forward to a place where budget is no longer as much of an issue. With smaller startups there is often a careful balance held between how much to invest in branding, web development, SEO, Collateral, and photography and video are always in the mix.
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is extremely important but what good is driving a ton of traffic to your website if it looks horrible because your photography and video look like they were shot by your 5 year old in your garage. With the great advances in current technology, even those on a tight budget, are without excuse because what you need to produce some really great looking imagery and video for your website is something you already own ... in fact you are probably holding it right now. Almost every smartphone on todays market has a camera on it capable of producing some stunning results.
With a little research on how to stage a good shot, how to light a scene, some testing for the perfect environment to capture images and video with your particular phone, and you could be well on your way to creating some quality imagery for your website. When I take photos with my digital SLR or a high end digital HD Video Camera of course I am able to achieve things that my iphone can not but that does not mean that shots taken with an iphone will always pale i comparison. So much of capturing a strong image has to do with either being in the right place at the right time or the lighting, the cropping, and the staging of an image. Feeling inspired? Go out there and try some things out. Need headshots for your staff? Don't take a picture of each person in their office with a bunch of clutter in the background. Pick a consistent background or if you are feeling a bit more adventurous do something creative that is memorable. Have each person wear a different black and white pattern or maybe a different solid color. Feeling really adventurous have everyone wear their most obnoxious ugly sweater. Have fun and make sure your concept works with what you want to communicate about you as a company. Are you more serious, quirky, does your team have fun. There are many reasons why one thing may work better than another but you will never know until you try. Remember there is always a delete button so click away.
